Uacari Expedition

DATES: FEBRUARY – MARCH – MAY – SEPTEMBER – NOVEMBER | WHERE: CRUZEIRO DO SUL – AC – BRAZIL | 08 DAYS / 07 NIGHTS

WHAT TO EXPECT?

An 8-day, 7-night itinerary in the state of Acre, one of the most biodiverse areas in the Amazon. On this itinerary, we’ll explore Serra do Divisor National Park, home to one of the most diverse primate species on the planet. The main focus of the expedition is wildlife observation, with a focus on primates.

As the name suggests, one of the main targets of our expedition is the uakari, but we hope to have many encounters and surprises with other species of primates, snakes, anuran amphibians, and whatever else crosses our path. The park has approximately 125 species of anuran amphibians and approximately 14 species of primates (some surveys suggest the number may be as high as 19), making it a biodiversity champion in Brazil and worldwide.

Below is a list of the species we can see during the expedition, according to the level of difficulty:

EASY LEVEL – WE GUARANTEE YOU WILL ENCOUNTER THE SPECIES BELOW

  • Southern Pygmy Marmoset – Cebuella niveiventris;
  • Spix’s Mustached Tamarin – Tamarinus mystax;
  • Spix’s Saddle-back Tamarin – Leontocebus fuscicollis;
  • Humboldt’s Squirrel Monkey – Saimiri cassiquiarensis;
  • Coppery Titi – Plecturocebus cupreus;

MEDIUM LEVEL – GOOD CHANCES OF ENCOUNTERING THE SPECIES, BUT NOT GUARANTEED

  • Ucayali Bald Uakari – Cacajao ucayalii;
  • Bearded Emperor Tamarin – Saguinus imperator subgrisescens;
  • White-mantled Tamarin – Saguinus weddelli melanoleucus;
  • Black-caped Capuchin – Sapajus apella;
  • Black Spider Monkey – Ateles chamek;
  • Poeppig’s Woolly Monkey – Lagothrix lagothricha poeppigii;
  • Spix’s White-fronted Capuchin – Cebus unicolor;
  • Burnished Saki – Pithecia inusta;

DIFFICULT LEVEL – SPECIES THAT ARE MORE DIFFICULT TO FIND, BUT WITH POSSIBILITIES

  • Ma’s Night Monkey – Aotus nancymaae;

Our trip begins in São Paulo, meeting at Guarulhos International Airport, where our flight to Cruzeiro do Sul, in the state of Acre, departs. Upon arrival in Cruzeiro do Sul, we’ll head straight to the Pousada da Janaína, where we’ll be staying. We’ll have an afternoon and a full day to explore the Croa River region in search of images of the Bigodeiro (Saguinus imperator subgrisescens) and the White-faced Saguinus (Saguinus melanoleucus), two iconic primate species that only occur on the left bank of the Juruá River. They don’t occur in Serra do Divisor National Park. Therefore, we dedicated a day and a half of our trip to Cruzeiro do Sul to photograph these two species.

After two days in Cruzeiro do Sul, we woke up early on the third day and headed to Mâncio Lima, home to the Japim Iagarapé, where we’ll depart for our visit to Serra do Divisor National Park. To reach our base in the park, we traveled up the Moa River for eight hours in covered boats with benches with backrests. However, be prepared, as it’s a long journey. Our base in the park has all the necessary facilities, including internet, solar power, a freezer, bathrooms, and shared rooms. During our stay in the park, we’ll hike extensively for wildlife observation, visit local waterfalls, and enjoy the local hospitality and cuisine.

The expedition is organized by photographer and wildlife filmmaker Rafael Guadeluppe, founder of the video production company Latin Wild Films and author of the documentary about the Atlantic Forest “The Pulse of the Atlantic Forest”.

In short, this is an expedition for those who enjoy nature trails, are energetic, and also interested in wildlife observation. Many people ask if they need to be a photographer or biologist to participate in our expeditions, and the answer is a resounding no. Just be sure you enjoy the countryside and come prepared, as the speedboat ride is somewhat tiring. In any case, we have an experienced team ready to offer participants the best possible experience.

We also emphasize that we can’t guarantee you’ll see any species. What we can guarantee is that we’ll be in the right places with the best team to encounter as many species as possible. The timing is ideal, so we expect to encounter a large number of species during our expedition.
