WHAT TO EXPECT?

An itinerary lasting 5 days and 4 nights in the untouched and unknown Bay of Caxiuanã. The focus of this tour is to provide a real and authentic experience in the Brazilian Amazon. We start our expedition in the city of Belém – PA, where we will take a boat to the city of Portel – PA. The journey takes approximately 16 hours and the client chooses when booking the tour whether they want to sleep in a hammock or in a suite on the boat. When we arrive in Portel, PA, we take a speedboat to our main destination, the Santa Cruz Community in Caxiuanã Bay. It takes about 3 hours to get there, and the seats have backrests.

Caxiuanã Bay, where we will be staying, is a totally wild and unexplored place. It has untouched forests, with a strong presence of centuries-old trees, such as Brazil Nut (Bertholletia excelsa) of impressive size.

It’s an exciting experience to spend a few days in a community so isolated and untouched by tourism, and to have the opportunity to learn more about their culture and way of life.

The community is visited in the morning by groups of Giant otters (Pteronura brasiliensis) and has many endemic species (which only exist there), such as the Splash-backed Poison Frog (Adelphobates galactonotus), the Golden Parakeet (Guaruba guarouba) and some primate species. During our hikes in the area, as well as enjoying the forest, we go in search of birds, primates, insects, amphibians and whatever else crosses our path, because we love all animals. As this is a very unspoiled area with little human activity, we expect many surprises along the way.

On our last expedition to the site, we also discovered an excellent stream for observing the Crimson Topaz (Topaza pella), the largest Brazilian hummingbird and considered by many to be the most beautiful.

During all the days of this part of the expedition, we will have an exclusive boat available for the journeys we will make in Caxiuanã Bay.

In short, it’s an expedition for those who like to walk, are willing and are also interested in wildlife watching. We’ll have lots of contact with the riverside culture and exchange experiences about photography and nature documentaries.

The expedition is organized by nature photographer and cameraman Rafael Guadeluppe, founder of the video production company Latin Wild Films and author of the documentary about the Atlantic Forest “The Pulse of the Atlantic Forest”.

An important note about the expedition: we’ll be sleeping in hammocks or tents, so it’s not a trip for those looking for comfort. Our destination is difficult to access and the facilities are very basic. So when you book the tour, bear this in mind and come prepared. We lost long hours on boats and speedboats to get there. But on site we’ll have a cook, a boat available, local guides and there’s also internet.

BOAT TRIPS

During our expedition, we will make two trips by ship on the rivers of Pará, at the mouth of the Amazon River, with the channels of Marajó Island and the Amazon rainforest as a backdrop. We are sailing exclusively with the company “Navegação Bom Jesus”, which has one of the largest fleets of passenger ships and catamarans in the north of the country. The ships are very spacious and comfortable, with a restaurant and bar on deck.

The ships have suites with private bathrooms and air conditioning, and the participant chooses when booking the tour whether they prefer to sleep in hammocks or in the suites. We provide the hammocks and if the participant chooses to sleep in the suites there is an extra charge of US$ 200.00.

We set off from Belém on Sunday at 6pm. The port has a snack bar and a private space with full security.

The trip takes approximately 15 hours.
